The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a student-centered programme that complements formal education by integrating learning with meaningful social service. Guided by the motto “Education through Service,” the scheme aims at the personality and character development of students through voluntary community engagement. It is a noble experiment in academic extension that nurtures social commitment, leadership, discipline, empathy, and a spirit of selfless service among students and teachers through sustained interaction with society.
NSS is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. In the state, the National Service Scheme (NSS) functions under the Higher Education Department, which coordinates and oversees various NSS activities and programmes implemented in educational institutions. It offers valuable opportunities for student youth studying in Higher Secondary schools (+2 level), technical institutions, colleges, and universities across India to actively participate in various community service programmes and government-led social initiatives.
The programme acts as a bridge between educational institutions and the community, connecting the campus with the village, knowledge with action, and education with social responsibility. By bringing students closer to real societal issues, NSS provides an extension dimension to the higher education system and encourages youth to become responsible citizens committed to nation-building and community welfare.
The overall objective of NSS is the holistic personality development of students through active participation in community service, thereby creating socially conscious and service-oriented youth.
